Successful Commissioning of a BWG Sampling System

The global demand for steel pipe and tube has been constantly on the rise. Steel material grades for welded pipe and tube may vary from soft low-strength to ultra-high-strength steels, with strip thicknesses of over 25 mm. Before the coils can be shipped, sub-prime quality strip like head and tail ends have to be cropped off. In addition, samples are taken for quality control and inspection.

In the design of both its manual and automatic equipment versions, BWG has focused on:

·        ergonomics and occupational safety

·        safe cutting and sampling of the strip

·        coil tracking

·        safe transport and delivery of the coil to the customer

·        identification of the taken samples

·        improved productivity and quality.

To meet these requirements, BWG has developed a customized solution for thyssenkrupp Steel Europe’s Bochum works.

In the summer of 2017, a manual sampling system was supplied that passed the performance and acceptance tests and was successfully commissioned. The manual design allows for the smooth and safe handling of different material grades. Manual torch cutting is employed at an ergonomically optimized and safe workplace. In the future, it is possible to upgrade the system with an automatic cutting tool.

Thanks to the sophisticated safety concept, all manual operations can be carried out risk-free and efficiently. From the beginning, the whole transport concept was devised to allow for a later upgrade to a fully automatic mode, which would include a fully automatic de-strapping system, an automatic strapping machine, an automated strip cross-cutting tool, etc.

With the new sampling system, thyssenkrupp Steel Europe is now able to cut soft to ultra-high-strength strip in a clean and safe way and can thus meet the demand for these challenging materials.
