New Product Development

BWG Bergwerk- und Walzwerk-Maschinenbau GmbH has been known for a long time as a competent, reliable and innovative supplier of technical solutions and mill duty equipment, esteemed for numerous patents and new developments that aim at optimizing individual process steps. Following in this tradition, a high-precision shape measuring roll, which can be specifically tailored to customer requirements, was recently added to the BWG product portfolio.

An inherent characteristic of many processes during the production of flat rolled metal parts is the formation of internal stresses of various kinds in the semi-finished product, which in turn can lead to undesired results in downstream processes. Associated with the inherent stresses in the rolled strip is the technological concept of strip shape and flatness. If the magnitude of inherent stresses exceeds a certain limit, waves and bows appear, leading to deviations from a perfectly flat strip shape. Strip shape problems can arise near the end of the manufacturing chain, or when handling the strip in the entry section of a strip processing line, or in the process section itself, or in slitting lines, etc. In certain process steps, the strip shape is also a suitable indicator from which to judge the quality of the process indirectly. For example after the skin-pass rolling of metal strips, because the distribution of the inherent stresses in the strip, which can be to the roll force distribution in the transverse direction in the roll gap, and which in turn directly affects the uniformity of the surface structure to be transferred from the work rolls to the strip. Therefore, this makes the measurement of strip shape and, if necessary, the introduction of countermeasures to avoid unwanted inherent stresses, an indispensable recurring component throughout the entire process chain.
